Tanuki has created this beautiful pair of jeans using the renowned Zetto fabric. This fabric pays homage to its origins, stemming from a texture and dye technique developed over 15 years ago. Today, the Zetto fabric stands as an evolved and refined version of its predecessor, offering an unparalleled denim experience.
Milled on the very same original shuttle loom that birthed its inception, this fabric remains exclusive and exceptionally limited in production. Tanuki has carefully selected Texan cotton as the foundation, ensuring a sturdy yet comfortable base for the distinctive irregular surface that defines Zetto denim. This Texan cotton is renowned for its ruggedness, gradually softening with each wear to provide a unique, personalized fit unlike any other fiber. Up until a few years ago, three shuttle looms had the capability to manufacture the fabric. However, after the catastrophic rains in Japan in 2018, two of them are now destroyed, so there is only a single shuttle loom in the world that can weave this fantastic denim. Once the last loom stops working, we will never see this fabric again.
Tanuki's commitment to quality extends to the dyeing process, with each yarn meticulously rope-dyed and dipped six times in pure indigo. However, their technique deviates slightly, with quicker dips resulting in a subtle, lighter blue tone. This nuanced approach allows the underlying weft to subtly reveal itself, creating a dynamic visual depth to the fabric.
The final touch comes from the distinctive yellowish ecru weft, lending a vintage sepia hue that adds character and a nostalgic feel. The combination of the Texas cotton base, intricate dyeing process, and unique weft results in a denim fabric that is not only visually captivating but also promises unparalleled comfort and durability.
The jeans feature a regular straight fit with a high rise making them super comfortable. The electric blue selvedge line running along the edge of the denim is just the beginning of the exceptional features of this garment. Custom copper buttons and copper rivets give a classic touch of luxury, while the custom vegetable-tanned deerskin leather patch adds a unique touch of style. The Japanese extra-durable herringbone cotton-lined fabric in front and back pockets ensures durability and longevity and the electric blue inner seam thread adds a subtle pop of color.
These jeans have a standard sizing. We recommend choosing your usual size. However, as always, we recommend checking the size chart first to find your perfect size. It is unsanforized but one washed, so there will be no shrinkage. The waist will experience the typical stretching seen in Tanuki denim due to the low tension weave. Expect approximately 1 inches of stretching.
The Tanuki brand was established in 2016 in Okayama Prefecture. It comprises a small group of great artisans who are passionate about denim and boast more than 30 years’ experience in other brands in the industry. If there is something that characterizes Tanuki garments in addition to its modern cuts, it is the quality and variety of its fabrics, with prime importance given to the best cottons, natural indigo and the application of different types of tension on the shuttle looms when producing the fabrics.
